| Bullet-Time (Matrix) |
 |
 |
At the latest since matrix the effect might be generally known - Bullet-Time.
At the latest? Yes, because this effect the “time stop” to be able gave it already before. Thus it is said, Bullet-Time is already the effect, with which one can stop
the time, and NEVERTHELESS a camera movement has. Real-Life-Filmers can carry out this effect only under larger efforts, are substantially simpler in stop Motion. Simpler however not means that it would not be connected with work.
The perfect conversion of this Effekt´s supplies at present still Steffen Trögers In Deep Royal Water, from whose film the pictures are to be seen here. Here one can look at oneself Sneak-Peak, in order to have the goal of this Tutorials before eyes.
But how it made that?
The solution actual like so much - is quite simply.
You should:
- have seen theTutorial "flying things" and understand it.
- have a Picture-Software wich works with Layers (Photopshop/Gimp)
- have a Capture-Programm wich can shoot stills (Pictures) frame by frame ( JPGvideo , Monkey-Jam, CSMC)
- have something like a Turntable (Just like on picture below) , or have a very calm hand.

The effect of the “time stopping” is reached in real- films by putting many cameras around the actor/object, just like a circle. these cameras are remote-controlled. Now one has a picture from each perspective to exactly the same millisecond. If one builds these pictures up to a film, one receives a camera travel around the actor/objekt.We can copy that, and naturally only with only one camera! Before it goes now to the solution is said that it is not important HOW LONG one the effect shows, but as spontaneous and perfect it is.
However the set should become “spatially prepared” a little. It is importantly to be kept varied the background. Only before one/two grey walls demonstrated, it would be very boring. The eye is interested in 2 things in most:
For the stopped object AND the background-area, which slides past along one.
Now you should put your set on the turntable, or put the set on an even place (e.g. CD-Covers). Because the set must be moved, and NOT the camera. The camera must be as always installed firmly on its place.
Step 1)
Now you begin as in “flying things - Tutorial” to photographing the set . Once the figure WITH the stone under the foot, and now (VERY IMPORTAND)...
Step 2)
...the same still again, but now WITHOUT the minifig (and without Brickstone). So you have thus 2 pictures, which resemble themselves so far that of the flying-things-Tutorial:
Picture 1 WITH minifig, pictuer 2 WITHOUT minifig.
1) 2)
STEP 3)
Now you continue to turn the set a little, so that a minimum of change of the camera-angle is present, and repeat the steps 1) and 2) . Now you must watch out to bring the figure if possible in ACCURATE the same position as before. Because it may not move. This you do now so often, until you reached the final camera-position. Important is here that you as always as possible continue to turn the set in the same distance, because otherwise develop unattractive more set-bumping. May be you have the chance to calibrated the possibility of the “graduation", so that it becomes really perfect....
(Thus the further steps would look...)
1) 2)
3)
4)
That was so far completely simple...
So far, because now you must still remove the brick which is still in the pictures. In addition you load now Picture 1 and 2 into your Picture-Software into separate layers. To Colonel you put the picture WITH stone, under it the picture without stone. Now you erase in the upper layer the stone away, and here the lower layer already shows up, i.e. the WITHOUT stone. This now you have to save in an folder of your choice. Now you begin with Picture 3 and 4 and repeat the whole again, again and again, until you removed the stone from all pictures.
The more exact and perfect you thereby are, around such a better result you get! Since you must probably work on at least 40-60 pictures, you should take yourself for it time, and does not rush going into it..
If you lose the desire, then rather stop working and continue other times!
Now you must only all pictures which you worked on save to a movie, finished!
Tipp:
- It is of advantage, if you do not dazzle abruptly into this “effect sequence”, separates in the animation “more slowly”, thus more pictures than usually for the animation is before already used. This not means the FPS!
- The “woush sound” should be missing in no case.
- You should fade out other audio noises during this scene, since it still strengthens thereby the effect!
- Not too often use the effect, at the best anyway only 1 time in your movie.
- “Point” to a meaningful END-camera position, like in the example to the “last impact”
- Did you seen laser-swa´s in bullet-time? (must look great!)
And now: Have fun with it...
Special thanks to Steffen Tröger for the supply of the pictures and film-sequence from his movie "In Deep Royal Water".
